The scale can't tell muscle from fat

Same weight on the scale. A very different body underneath. Here is a sample scan in the CrossFit OTL app, with made-up numbers: the scale says nothing changed, the scan shows 6 lb more muscle and 6 lb less fat.

  • Sample results screen: InBody score 83, up 7. Weight 180 lb with no change, muscle 80 lb up 6 lb, body fat 20 percent down 3.3 points.
    Your score and what changed
  • Sample body composition chart: 180 lb split into water, dry lean mass and body fat, with what it means in plain words.
What your weight is made of
  • Sample segmental lean figure: lean mass in each arm, each leg and the trunk, and whether your left and right sides match.
Arms, legs and trunk, side by side

Every scan lands in the app with what each number means and how it changed since last time.

Before your scan

Do the same thing every time so the numbers you compare are fair.

  • Come before you work out, not after.
  • Skip food for 2 to 3 hours before.
  • Drink water like normal, but don't chug right before.
  • Skip coffee and alcohol beforehand.
  • Use the restroom first.
  • Scan at the same time of day each time.
